Review - Battleship (2012)

Battleship is the latest action movie from Hollywood, that has taken the world by storm. This movie is based on the classic naval combat game, and revolves around an international fleet of ships who come face to face with an alien armada while on a regular Naval exercise. What follows is an intense battle across sea, land and air.

Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) is a talented but undisciplined slacker, whose brother Stone (Alexander Skarsgard), a naval Commander, forces Hopper to join the US Navy. Alex's life becomes very interesting, when he is made a lieutenant on a ship, which is the sister-ship to the one under his brother Stone's command. Alex falls in love with Admiral Shane's (Liam Neeson) daughter, Samantha (Brooklyn Decker), and wants to marry her. After a brawl with a Japanese officer, Alex is on the verge of being kicked out of the Navy itself.

Meanwhile, a group of Alien spaceships descend onto Earth, and land in the waters of Hawaii, and take out quite a number of ships belonging to the US and other countries. The aliens also put up a force field, trapping a lot of people hostage within it, and killing many, including Stone. Alex, with some remaining survivors, learns of the aliens' weakness to sunlight, and attacks them, and manages to destroy most of them. Unknown to the humans, the aliens are planning to use NASA's own communications systems to send across a signal to their motherland, asking them to invade earth. Do the humans, lead by Alex, with very limited resources, have it in them to thwart the aliens' attempts, and save the world?

Battleship has one amazing star cast with the likes of Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard, Rihanna, and others in it. All the stars have lived up to their expectations, and done their bit for the movie, though one feels that some stars could have been used better, and given more screen space. The visual effects are stunning, and the battle sequences have been wonderfully etched. The director, Peter Berg has done a wonderful job, and the background score adds to the viewing experience.

Verdict: Battleship is a must watch, and is sure to pack a punch, and take you on one exhilarating action ride, this summer.
